How many of you remember the experiment where the scientist tried to see how long they could live in an enclosed air tight area? This study was started because of the fear of the environment being abused to the point where we might not have the oxygen, or food to eat.
This is the place, located in Tucson.

I am not sure what this bell's function was but I had to give it a ring.

This is a picture of the main living quarters. They stayed in for almost two years, with no outside help. If you look to the left, the thing that looks like a white tank is actually an air bladder. They had two. These large bladders were piped under ground connecting the main living area and the garden area. Their purpose was to equalize the pressure from day to night, with the extreme temperature changes. Without these equalizing bladders, during the day when the heat would reach the 100's, it would have blown all the windows out of the complex. The bladders would expand during the day and give back during the night.

The large glass building was the farming area. They had one of everything. They had to grow all the food necessary to survive the duration, without any outside help. They grew their own coffee, sugar, and many many other items. In the end, their easiest food was bananas.
The experiment didn't quite make it two years, and some say they cheated. What actually happened, near the end, was that a lot of the staff were starting to be sick and they couldn't pinpoint what the cause was. It turned out that the Bactria in the garden area was multiplying much faster than the green plants could reproduce the oxygen and they were actually suffocating. When they learned this they drilled a pipe under ground to the complex and pumped in oxygen. This was where the controversy came from. The people said they had outside help, and the experiment should be declared a failure.
If you are in this area this is well worth your time. You won't be bored and it is not very strenuous.
