This is our contribution to going green.

When we built this house new in 2001 we did not consider the distance of the water heater from the master bedroom . Also we did not insulate the hotwater line which runs under the slab and has a tendency to cool off rather quickly.

The end result is we have to run the faucet or shower for at least a minute to get the hot water on the master bedroom side of the house. We identified that there are 3 times a day minimum that we waste water down the drain waiting for hotwater. It was time to draw the line.

I know they make circulation pumps for this purpose but it requires an extra hot water pipe for the return line and this is not an option for established houses.

Looking on line I found a company called Chile Pepper. They make a unit that installs under the sink that is equipped with a pump, thermostat, and manual switch which is designed to hook into your original plumbing and draw hot water from your remote location and run it back thru your cold water line until the desired hot water temperature is reached. The unit then automatically cuts off. This is exactly what I was looking for.

It took me about and hour to do the installation. One of the requirements is that you have power access under the cabinets. We were fortunate we had installed power outlets at the base of our cabinets for powering under the cabinet lighting.

We mounted the on switch on the front of the cabinet for ease of operation. Now when we want to take a shower or wash old makeup off we merely hit the switch, listen for the pump to shut off and violia the hot water is there, with no water waste.

It makes us both feel good to know we are not throwing good water down the drain waiting on hot water.

Here it is.

Just hit the On button and with in a minute you have instant hot water at the sink.

The shower is located about five foot from the sink but on the same hot water line. It takes about 4 seconds for the hot water to reach the shower. A lot better than the old 1 to 11/2 minutes.
