We were still riding the coast. Check out the Oregon tags on the Harley.
These were the days when everyone, new to fulltiming was trying to register in Oregon, to elimate the sales tax. We sent the registration for the Harley and the bug in with a Jefferson, Oregon mail forwarding address to register both vehicles to see if it would work. With in two weeks we had our tags back. This was good. When we brought the RV 3 months later, in Florida, I explained to the salesman that we needed temporary 30 tags until we could receive out tags from Oregon and may have to renew a couple of times. No problem. On the road we went. A couple of months went by and no tags. Finally I bit the bullet and called the Oregon DMV. The lady that answered the phone said she had our file on her desk and was waiting for us to call. You CANNOT DO IT. I said but we already have two vehicles registered there. She said I know and you have two weeks to find somewhere to register them because I am canceling your tags. You have to live here for 6 months of the year to qualify and a mail forwarding address does not cut it.
We then hustled and called Escapees and signed up, called the DMV office, sent the 7 grand sales tax plus 260 something for the tags and by the time we hit Frontier Days in Cheyenne, Wy we had new legal tags.
A little while later is when we started reading a lot about the crack down on out of state registrations.
When we transfered the RV to Florida we had already satisfied the Sales tax issue, so it was real reasonable.
Today if I had to do it again I would probably use South Dakota. 3 % Sales Tax, No State Income Tax. I think everyone has settled down on this issue, but in the old days it was the hottest topic on the BB.
These tags bring back a lot of memories.
