We were staying in Julian,Ca which was fairly near the desert. On the way up the mountain, we came across an Ice Cream & Bread store. It's a must stop.
This first picture made us realize why we had made the right decision to bring the Harley with us on our travels. The weather was beautiful and two hours into the desert ride, Susie said she thought she saw a mirage up ahead. Just like in the movies. I told her I was seeing the same thing. It really looked like a large body of water. We kept riding and in another hour we were at the Salton Sea. Didn't even know it was there. We had both heard of it. Can't seem to find the picture of it, but it's one of those places that is more picturesque thinking about it than actually seeing it. It's just a old run down basin of water, but big.
Anyway check out the desert.

Check out the mountains in the background. This was the first desert we had ever seen. I was looking for the great big white sand hills. Nothing like that, but really pretty in it's own way. We made several stops. After thinking about being without cell service after the first five miles, it was a little scary being out there all by ourselves, because we didn't see anybody for two hours. Also no one knew we were out there. Not too smart. What if we had a flat or bike trouble?
Two months later we were in Kamiah,Id on our way to Nez Pez going over a mountain pass and the Harley started knocking. Trying to get back to the campground we blew the motor. Just glad it wasn't in the Anza borrough.
We had friends in Olympia,Wash and took the bike to their Harley Shop and ended up buying a new motor. Never had any trouble since.

About 45 minutes out, there was a food stop. Kind of like a desert Oasis. They really had some pretty flowers, and check out the purple cactus.

Later on in our travels we visited the White Sands Monument Desert and it was more what we were expecting.

Although it was interesting to see all this sand with no water around.

The sand was really hot on the top but as soon as you broke thru it was cool on your feet.
