Posting pictures and graphics (“tags”)
We frequently hear from members confused by what they can and can’t post, and asking for guidance. Hopefully, this will be helpful to you….
B) When it comes to adding pictures or graphics (”tags”) to decorate some of your postings, things get difficult, because some are in the public domain and can be used, and others are private property and may or may not be used without consent or giving credit. Usually, the private graphics are identified by being signed, or by the small copyright insignia ©. Here’s where it gets even more complicated…. some artists want their work copied and distributed, even though it may be signed, because more exposure leads to more name recognition, which enhances their reputation and market value.
So, how can you tell what’s safe to copy and what isn’t? The reality is there’s no simple answer, but here’s what we recommend:
a) Avoid pictures/graphics that are signed or have the copyright insignia ©.
b) Take a moment to scan the website where the graphic resides, to see if they have any copying restrictions. Many don’t, but some say it’s OK to copy providing you give credit to their site. Avoid sites with that requirement.
In a nutshell…… The member is totally responsible for not posting material that is copyrighted or privately owned, and we'll delete any posting that suggests a copyright or private ownership (insignia (c), name, signature, etc.). Whether or not the member owns the material is irrelevant.
If all else fails and you make an innocent, inadvertent mistake, the owner of the picture/graphic is required to notify us in writing of the infraction. We’d then contact you and have the item removed. This has never happened, and hopefully never will.
