Ok, I'll have to admit I'm weird.
I'll be the one asking the strangest of all the questions.
But, I do have a reason, I think....
Anyway, I think that we're all probably in the age range of over 40. So, does anyone remember a cough medicine your mom or grandma made when you were a kid and had a nasty cough? We didn't go to doctors, we were never that sick (back then, you had to be really sick to go to a doc, and then "he" always came by the house.
My mom made something with honey and butter and lemon juice with maybe some rum in it????
I called her, but since she's got Alzheimer's she couldn't remember making anything like that, but with her wicked since of humor she thought it sounded like a good idea.
Bud and I have come down with the real flu and have wracking coughs. Nyquil tastes like something you could put in the MH drains to keep them from freezing.
Blessings, Sparky

I think it's honey, lemon and whiskey combined or some recipes called for whiskey with rock candy dissolved in it. I find a sip Irish Mist liquor is a good cough medicine, it realy stops the cough and the tickle in your throat. Hope you are both better soon!

I've said it before, I'll say it again...TheraFlu. When I was in Scotland my mother used to heat orange soda in a pan with a teaspoon of sugar. Made me drink it with 2 aspirin at night. It worked. Well somebody commercialised it and now you can buy much the same thing. It really works, there is a daytime and nighttime version now.

My mom used to use a 1 jigger each of lemon juice, honey in a cup of boiling water and added one jigger of whiskey. I am not sure if it worked or if I just passed out and didn't know I was coughing!

oh..I have never tried this but have heard several people say it really works...for a hacky cough at night before you go to bed rub Vicks Vapor Rub on the soles of your feet and put on socks and you don't cough. Can't see how it works, but I suppose next time I'm miserable I'll give it a try because it certainly can't hurt anything.

Recipe was hot tea, generous amount honey, generous amount lemon, and generous amount of whiskey. It worked!
When working in a critical care unit many moons ago, we would keep a bottle of vodka available to put in the humidifiers for people in respiratory distress. It really did help to thin out their secretions and open up the airways. For sure, vodka was much more irritating than what they use today but it worked.
Another home grown tip is blackberry brandy. It has the alcohol, sugar, and probably Vitamin C.
Also, homemade or good chicken soup really does have magic powers.
(that's all I have in my toolbox :))
I'm just getting over it too - no fun and cough is awful.
