Hawaiian Ribs Slow Cooker Recipe

2 pounds boneless beef short ribs, or about 4 pounds baby back ribs (can use pork ribs too)
1/3 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon honey
1/2 teaspoon Chinese 5-Spice powder (I'll put a recipe to make your own down
below)
6 cloves minced garlic

Chinese 5 Spice Powder recipe:
(mix spices well, and store in an air-tight container for up to 6 months)

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon crushed anise seed
1/4 teaspoon ground fennel
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

The Directions.

Put the ribs into the cooker, and top with the sauce mixture. Cover and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours, or on high for about 4 to 5. Flip the ribs over a few times before serving to cover evenly in the sauce. The longer and slower you cook the ribs, the more tender the meat.

sounds good

have you tried the 5 spice recipe?

see a recipe everyone once in awhile that has it in it but never have the spice so never make them. Now maybe I can if I can find the fennal in small amounts as well as the anise

Sheila, I've not tried the 5 spice recipe, but I was delighted to see it. I'm going into Houston next week with granddaughter--- and will drop by Fiesta Grocery. They have a huge bulk spices and "thangs" area.... and may be able to get what I need. Ummmm, wonder if they sell spices by the teaspoon and tablespoon?

Have a laughing good day!!

Happy Travels!

we have a store up in ID and Ut named Winco has a huge bulk section as well and they do have spice in that area and you can get small amounts that is the way I like to buy my spices when I can so I don't have so much to go through..

will need to see if I can get these ingredients

Just checked my five spice powder and it contains cinnamon, ginger, anise, fennel and cloves.

These sound good...think I'll have to try them. Yesterday I found a package of beef short ribs buried the bottom of the freezer. They'll have bones in them...but what the hey? My problem with crockpots is if I start something before I leave for work and we don't eat until around 7...whatever it is has had 12 hours of cook them. Something get a little too well done.

I tried the sauce on pork chops in the oven tonight. I really liked it...DH wasn't quite as impressed.

Glad you liked the recipe, Pat. I did find and buy some Chinese Five Spices--- put out by Dynasty. The ingredients seem to vary from maker to maker. Mine contain Cinnamon, Star Anise, Fennel, Ginger, Cloves, White Pepper and Licorice Root.

I think mine has a "double whammy of licorice taste"... It smells like licorice even with the lid on... Used to love licorice when I was a kid! I still may. Haven't had any in 100 years!

I now have the spices...now to find ribs on sale.. We are planning a BBQ pit full of meats--- soon as I find chicken on sale too. We love to cook up a pit full, then stash it in the freezer! Plan to do chicken, pork ribs, beef brisket and link sausage! Oh YUM!!

Happy Cookin and Travelin'

Joella
