I am a single 54 year old women and seriously considering buying an rv. Even though the 5th wheeler would give me the flexibility of driving locally with a truck, that rv seems difficult to backup, move into a space and manuever. If anyone has a class A or C and you are at a camprground how do you go about renting a car for local travel? Do the rental companies bring the car to you? I really don't know the first thing about rving. I live in Florida and have two small dogs and my Mom has one. This past summer has been the worst hot and humid one. We want to be able to go North for the next summer but with 3 dogs I think the best place for us is in an rv. I am doing lots of research but how do you get around when you are at a campsight. Thanks for your help.

I am looking into buying an rv and I am having a hard time deciding which class to buy. ONe BIG question that I have is this: If you have a big rv and want to go into a small village, what do you do?

Thank you for your reply Ekat. I suppose the best thing is to rent a class c and just start the experience. If I were by myself I would probably buy the Roadtrek like you but I have an 80 year old Mom and 3 dogs. We need space! I need to rent and meet other rvers and have them share their experiences. This forum is wonderful. I have already read lots of great ideas. Thanks for sharing. :)

Good idea, Ekat. I will ask about the orientation info. The dogs are small..all less than 12 pounds and pretty well behaved for rescues. I hope that is not a problem at campgrounds?? I am so excited about starting my new adventure!! Will keep the forum posted on my rental experience. Thanks again.

Welcome and good luck in your decision making process. I loved the Roadtrek and some of those other vans, but there were a tad too small for me. Mine is one of the smallest Class C's tho - at 22' (but with one slide).
Many people will tell you not to buy small. I will not say that - as I LOVE the smaller sizes. I will say - go look at them and see what will work for YOU. We are all different. Do you need a walk around bed? If so - you'll need to go to 26' or more, most likely.
I decided on a Class C - and staying with a Ford - cuz I happen to like Fords lol- and I know I can find a Ford dealer easily enough if I have trouble with the truck part. I went with small because I drive lots of the scenic roads where the larger rigs would have trouble. And I like to camp at the places that only smaller rigs can go.
How you want to drive and camp will also help you decide what you want to have.
As to your question on the dogs. I have 2. You will discover some cg's have rules of no more than 2 dogs. I just saw one that I can't go to because it won't allow more than 1. I figure it's just their loss :)
As to rentals - that might help you decide between rv types - but I discovered they didn't have many choices in styles - so to really see those, I did lots of virtual tours online - and visited rv shows, etc. But I never saw my exact one until I visited it after calling the folks who had it for sale. It was love at first site when I walked in the door :) And I love it as much now as then.
Editing to add - for your original question - for the past 2 1/2 years - I've gotten around locally by taking my rv. This summer, for the first time - I've rented from Enterprise - this coming week will be the 2nd time - at less than $100 each time - it's a bargain. Yes, they come get me and take me to them - then when I return the car, they return me to the cg.
This coming winter, I'm intending to get a scooter (after I take a motorcycle class) and to put it on my hitch. It's my decision that I don't want to tow - again because of how I like to travel.
Smiling is contagious - try it!

Hi Genny - I haven't bought my motorhome yet but am in the planning stages like you. My hope is to get a smaller (no larger then 26') motorhome then tow a smallish car behind me. From what I read it's not a big problem, you just have to get the right vehicle and tow system (check out Remco) I thought about getting a scooter or renting, but it just didn't feel right to me. Maybe after I've lived the rv life for awhile I'll get rid of the car, but for now I think I need it - I have a dog too - just a little 20lb terrier. I can't quite see getting her on a scooter if I need/want to take her with me on a day trip ! For that reason alone I'm going with a toad. Molly and me wanna be free !

I was afraid 3 would be a problem. In the cases you described, someone had to tell those Rangers about the pets. I assume that if it is a hot day one must leave the a/c going or the rv becomes too hot. Or the dogs are barking and disturbing the guests. If not, why on earth would they break into someone's rv?? I would never tie them up outside. My little canines are very spoiled...long walks, a/c and lots of pampering. LOL. In fact, the idea of buying an rv started because I hate Florida in the summer and where could I go up North and rent a place with 3 dogs?? Thus was born the idea of an rv. But thanks for the info. At least I have been warned.
