Sheila and I went to Los Algodones yesterday. Larry drove us - but he did stuff in Yuma - 'guy' stuff! LOL We had appointments with a dentist - my old business partner made them as he's Mexican and can actually call the country ( :) ). Jenny had recommended a gal and I think Sheila and I were both very pleased. The teeth extravaganza was so inexpensive Sheila decided to get new glasses too! We wandered around town, Sheila bought a purse and a couple of necklaces, I loaded up on medications that were less expensive in MX than through my insurance. We had lunch at a place, El Paraiso, that had been in business since 1947. All in all a fun day! And the wait to leave was only 30 minutes or so.

Young man selling asparagus - the same price as in the States - but so nicely arranged!

A guy selling camarones (shrimp) - if I'd had an ice chest I would have bought some!

A young man had a jewelry stand inside the plaza with the restaurant - as can be expected - Sheila and I each bought something!

Sheila figuring out her shrimp tacos - which weren't quite as she expected! And her drink! On the menu as a Chile Tempo. We had to ask what it was - grenadine, 7Up and a cherry. Well - no cherries today - so she got a huge strawberry. We burst out laughing when she got it - it was a Shirley Temple! A Chile Tempo is kind of a 'Spanglish' translation. Chile in Spanish sounds a great deal like Shirley in English.

She's figuring it out! I had Carne Asada - grilled skirt steak - comes with all that stuff and a couple of handmade tortillas - do it yourself fajitas.

We even had mariachis! Before the mariachis we had a 'typical' Mexican singer with his keyboard - the crowd was very appreciative when he did his Elvis numbers!

They say that during January 33,000 American and Canadian visitors cross the border. They also say that Los Algodones has, in a four square block area, more dentists, opticians and farmacias than any place in the world! It was lots of fun!

Of all the border Mexican towns we've been to, Algadones is our favorite. It is the most friendly to Gringos...and although the area is small, it has everything one could ever wish or dream for in the local shops for sale.

It looks like y'all ate at our favorite hang-out. Our group used to go there and eat. First we'd have a happy hour with quarts of beer served in a metal bucket of ice....or mixed drinks for those who preferred them,.. Me--- I wanted the Tres X's.. (3 XXX) beer. I've not seen that beer anywhere else but there, although I have seen the Dos X's.. (2XX). Food was good, and we'd wile away the time soaking up the suds and the music of the Mariachis or keyboard man.

If it is the same place, they seem to have removed all the small trees and shrubs on the patio area... They formed a canopy of leaves and shade. To walk there --- when you cross the border, do you go straight one block and then take a left and go one block to the Patio Restaurant?

Your photos surely made me wish I was there...as really am fond of that little border town that treats we Gringos so well. We did see a dentist there, got glasses there, drove our truck across the border and bought diesel there --- but we were never able to save money on our medications..

Oh... seeing the photos of the street vendors reminded me. We also ate from those little street carts. Never worried about getting sick---- and we never did. I don't think anyone makes better soups than the Mexicans!!! Best one I ever had was in a little dirt floored tent covered stand. The stove was a truck wheel, filled with charcoal...and Oh My!!! the chicken soup was to die for!!!

Thanks for the memories, Kerry! Your fine photos brought them back. We used to come there yearly for about ten years with our traveling buddies.

Happy RVing!

Joella

Joella - one of the joys of this forum! Getting acquainted with places and things we haven't been to, or done, or seen AND being reminded of wonderful old times. I enjoyed it immensely! I felt as if the number of non-Mexicans who visit have brought the overall standard of living up - there didn't seem to be the level of desperation that is perceived in many of the border towns. Everyone just seemed pleased with life, and that makes such an enormous difference! I'm so glad my pictures took you down memory lane. And yes, down one block, left one block and in to El Paraiso. There is only one central planter now - most tables had umbrellas, ours didn't. Just delightful regardless.........

Kerry - sure looks like you enjoyed your across the border visit. I just read an article on the internet about parents discouraging their kids from going to MX on spring breaks - especially the border towns and how dangeous it has become. It sure looked safe enough to me in your pictures. Did you see anything out of the ordinary as far as safety is concerned?

Enjoy yourselves!!
