I am not a birder, and don't know much about them...but this little guy showed up in our yard last year...and took me FOREVER to find out what kind of bird it was, It is a Male Painted Bunting.
I did NOT take this photo, have not tried to get a picture of ours. He is around every afternoon when we are in the spa. isn't he a beauty.?? he's wearing a coat of many colors!!

I love the Painted Bunting and have made 3 birding trips to Corpus Christi in search of him. I have seen him one time. This summer DH and I went to Georgia in search of him. We both saw him in Georgia. Take a picture of him if you can. They are very illusive. Be on the lookout for his mate. She is LIME green, and very beautiful. Sincerely yours, Marslet

Oh Joella I am so envious you found the Male Painted Bunting!! This is the one bird I have always wanted to see and capture on on my camera! Beautiful! Guess I just have to head your way to see some :) Will look for some on my way to Mexico via Texas in Feb.

Marslet,I'll be on the look-out for his mate. Is she the same lime green that he has on him? I don't have much of a camera, and no zoom lens...and I sincerely doubt I'll ever capture a photo of him with my little $48. Digital Camera! :)
He is a very feisty little feller..We have LOTS of Cardinals, and they fly to the bird feeder, chasing away the other smaller birds, intimidating them...but this little guy is not afraid of them. He says and eats. I enjoy him!
This photo was taken by Peter La Tourette. Is he a famous birder and bird photographer? Must be..he has 426 birds on his website.. Joella

Yes, she is the same lime green. They usually don't stay around a long time to get a picture of them. Who knows, you might be able to get one. Give it a try. Sincerely yours, Marslet

When I first came to this country I thought someone had lost their parrot - I found out later I'd been trying to rescue a Cardinal. Then one night I woke up and something made me look out the window. There was a MAN standing in the garden! He had the nerve to just stand there and smoke a cigarette. There he goes again - cigarette glowing in the dark...woke up nasty first husband...do something! It was a firefly. 1984 Class A Allegro(Miss Piggy) Bogie the Pit (rescued) ....and this too shall pass.

To funny Sparkle. I can imagine the idea of a fella smoking a cig in your yard, would be spooky! I hate those kind of experiences, but glad it was just a firefly. Hey Joella do we all have to come sit in your spa to see that beautiful bird? Gosh I hope I see them down in the Gulf when we get there. I noticed they had noisy black birds with long tail feathers at S Padre, do you know what their name is. We really got a kick out of all the different sounds they make. We have Blue Jays in our yard and they can also make a bunch of different noises. I have one I meow at and he meows back!! Thinks he's a cat I guess, with all of our cats who hang outside in the cage talking to them. Blessings Cillie Happiness is living your best dreams and God answering your prayers!!!

Glad you answered Cillie's question, Marslet...I told you right up front I know little about birds..
My answer would have been.......DUH!!!! :)
I've been looking for that female painted bunting..I'm sure I'd have noticed her bright green colors IF there was one here..unless she is hiding..and won't come to the feeder.
Have a great day!! Joella
