Sunseeker (Jill) It's not that it's a common happening ..but it does happen. Most of the times it's because the unexpected does happen! Like I said, "it has happen to me 2 times in 25+ years. Both times were totally unexpected. One while in Nevada, and the other while at a dog show. I now make sure I put my awning up with the electric one.
When I was at the dog shows, all of us don't stake in the awnings because we moved from show to show, and sometimes we park on Hard survaces. Even though we make a run for it...sometimes we're not lucky ! Like I said.
Just a good reminder when you do put your Awning down and are staying more than one day. Anchor it down ! Listen also to the weather, and again depends on what part of the country you're in.
While driving with my other Awning I put velcro straps around the arms and we also bungied up around the top.. didn't know then about those locks you can have put on..
So hope this all helps all of you lurking too !
God Bless

The wind got mine while I was going down the road. Thank goodness I had just gotten off the interstate and was going through town at no more than 45 mph when it unrolled from the top . I have friends who sell Coil N Wrap products and they sell a pin that mounts to the awning to prevent it from unrolling. My rv tech had never seen one but installed it for me and was impressed with how easy it worked!! You do have to remember to tap it back out so your awning can be let down!! LOL

Sunseeker...this is from the website of Coil N Wrap..
quote:
The #1 cause of insurance claims on RV's is awning damage. This is caused by the failure of the awning roller tube locking mechanism. Often this is due to vibration, wind or operator error.
unquote:
Another cause of awning damage is winds tearing them up while parked with them extended. We never leave ours out when we are away from the RV for even a little while. While in Jackson, WY..where strong winds often blow up...another camper warned one man and he said "Oh that's OK...I have it anchored down really good!"...He came home to find his awning upside down wrapped over the top of his RV... totally destroyed. Winds can blow up fast, be strong and very treacherous.. He took it like a champ and had to laugh at himself for being so certain he had it all in hand!
