I just ordered some bear spray on-line. A retired state trouper recommended it last fall when I was having my rv serviced. He said it was very effective and legal in all states and you could take it in to Canada. The spray I carry now isn't legal in Michigan and New York and you can not take it in to Canada. I guess the bear attack in East Tn. the week we left Pigeon Forge also had an impact on my deciding to go ahead and order it.
Does anyone else carry it? Groovin Grannie Fernie and Running Bear (Winnebago Warrior)

Never heard of it...have seen bear bells but always laughed at those. But anything to give you an edge. When we lived in the middle of the Allegheny Natl Forest in PA, there were black bear everywhere. We were advised by the rangers (and other locals) that the bears were more afraid of us than we were them - just make noise as we walked the woods. Of course the only exception is a mother bear with cub(s). Steer away immediately....I suspect that is why the girl in east TN was killed. She unknowingly got between the cub and the mother - nothing to do with a rogue bear.
I'm heading off the Bowling Green in a bit...don't know if I'll be on again until I get home on Mon or Tues. Everyone have a great weekend! Having tracked bears for the Forest Service I can tell you from personal-TOO PERSONAL experience in August they start getting quite territorial and by early October well if you are near apple trees, fruit bushes and a lot of rotten logs, they stay longer to eat and don't like guests. They are habitual and have one area they usually return to till food runs out.The big boys know they can be the boss. Just hike smart and listen to what's around you. Digging, scratching and grunts or heavy breathing, and i don't mean in a tent you pass by. Have fun!

I don't plan on tracking bears or getting too personal with them but just in case, I'd like to be prepared. This was recommended because so many sprays aren't legal as personal protection in some states and this is legal everywhere. I don't want to carry a gun and they aren't legal anyway a lot of places. My pics of bears will be with a good zoom lens!! LOL Groovin Grannie Fernie and Running Bear (Winnebago Warrior)

Ok, no helpful hints but this is related... somewhat..
I was at Glacier National Park buying some tourist stuff, I was behind a couple who were buying, "bear bells". After they left I told the clerk my joke about how can you tell bear poop from other animals. You can tell it is if it is full of bells and smells like pepper. She gave a slight grin and nodded towards the couple getting in their car , she said "around here we call those things dinner bells".

If you go back and read between the lines, I'm a lot more interested in protecting myself from unwanted 2-legged bares than I am 4-legged bears in the woods!! My mace is not legal in some states. Bear spray is legal anywhere and will stop anyone or anything!! Groovin Grannie Fernie and Running Bear (Winnebago Warrior)

Hey Fern, I'd be more afraid of the two legged bears in blue jeans. I didn't realize that pepper spray was not ok in some states. I will get the new stuff and put it right by my big stick. LOL. I have family in alaska and when up there we too make lots of noise to scare the bears and the moose. Big beautiful country we have. Makes me want to see it all.
