I am having a problem with the built-in microwave in my 1998 Jayco travel trailer. We bought it used this year and just this last weekend got to stay in it overnight. When I tried to use the microwave it would work for a minute or two and then shut off, like a breaker being thrown although nothing else in the trailer went off. At the time we only had lights and the coffee pot in use. We removed the microwave from the trailer and brought it into our home kitchen and it seems to run fine there. My husband is thinking maybe it's the combination of the hot water heater, lights and coffee pot all pulling juice at the same time??? Has anyone else had this problem? ANY SUGGESTIONS would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! Jenny, Hubby and 3 Weenies!

Jenny, if the microwave works at home...I'd say you were overloading your electrical circuits...and it has an automatic shut-off, since you said no breakers blew. To test it out, unplug the coffee pot and turn off some lights and see if the microwave continues to work.
You only have 30 amps of electricity to use in the whole unit... so if you overload and try to use too many appliances, lights, etc at a time....it just won't work.
Good luck!! Jomilt From Texas

Jenny, My bets on that too.. 30 amps running hot water if it's electric ?? would use a lot.. coffee pot .. like Mr Coffee.. takes a lot to make coffee.. also all the lights on..yeppers..you used every bit.. I remember when I had to put the AC on fan to run the microwave.. and if I needed coffee.. I had to only run that ..takes a lot of amps.. you'd be surprised.. So you have to do the trade offs..LOL You'll get the swing of it.. I don't use my hot water on Electric, as I have a choice but some TT's do it automatically when plugged in it switches to electric.. You tested out your microwave so you know it works at home..soooo. it wasn't that..see you are beginning to get the picture.. trial and error..LOL we still make lots of them..LOL
God Bless..
Barbzeee....I remember writing notes which to use when I could LOL..

I've heard others have problems running both the microwave and the coffee maker. Both have a high draw on your power. Just a thought... Jenny, Do you have a Voltage meter? You can get one from Camping world for $17.99 It reads 96-134 volts and shows whether you are in the Green( good) or red ( too low or too high). When you turn something on watch how much power you are useing.
If you are on 30 amps yes everything pretty much has to be off to use your microwave. Once you start being aware of this it will become a habit to turn things off before you use something that draws alot ot power. Hair dryers pull alot of amps too. Seeya down the road, Jenny

There are a lot of little things you learn by trial and error. I was having a problem with my fridge when I got home. I'd clean it, then leave the door open so it wouldn't mildew - but, there was no way to switch off the light and I knew it would drain the battery. I tried sticking it down with duct tape. Okay you guys, stop snickering - I can hear you! Yep, I finally learned - take the LIGHTBULB out! Also I heard that it's a good idea to always leave water in the toilet so the seal doesn't dry out. 1984 Class A Allegro Bogie the Pit (rescued) Practise random acts of kindness.

You gals are great...once again you came to the rescue! DH says the hot water heater can work off gas and plans to switch it over next time out...we were a hoot just trying to figure out how everything worked first time out...greenhorns that's for sure! I can just see how much fun this will be when the air is running! Lots to learn and I sure am glad to have you all for comfort! LOL Jenny, Hubby and 3 Weenies!

Jenny, Just a hint to save on electricity use...The hotwater heater will heat up fast...Yes, you can run on propane all the time and help out with the electrical problem, but in order to save propane... just leave the hot water heater off entirely, turning it on only before you are going to use it. We do that sometimes when "service use" of electricity is at it's highest.. Also, when you do get to a/c weather, and if you "blow" something with your carelessness...(laughing/teasing here) when you get everything turned back on, but your air conditioner WON'T come back on.....don't panic!! I don't know if yours is like ours, but it has a safety feature that doesn't allow the a/c to come right back on...but has a "rest period" of a minute or so....so as not to overload the circuits with everything booting up at one time.. You will learn all the little idiosyncrasies of your RV before long.. Meanwhile it's a "laughing period" of hands on studies!!! :) Jomilt From Texas

Yep Joella..I can see already that this is going to be interesting. I had already learned in the pop-up that I couldn't use a hair dryer and the air-conditioner at the same time without throwing a breaker...now I have a lot more "toys" to tinker with..thanks for the info on the hot water..hopefully once it gets to be airconditioner season we won't require as much hot water! LOL A cool shower usually feels good when it's over 100 degrees outside! Jenny, Hubby and 3 Weenies!

Jenny, As well as only turning the hot water heater on for a bit before needed, I suggest you keep your water pump off and only turn it on if needed. Water problems are really the pits. I've gotten in the habit of turning the water off from the spigot when I'm away from the rv and sometimes I do at night also.
It only took one water leak from a bad toilet seal for me to decide I didn't need water problems. That was minor, but happened while I was right here and during the day. I got the water off before a problem developed - but even overnight that could have made quite a mess. Smiling is contagious - try it!
