I've hesitated writing about this lest I be accused of Urban-Legend-Mongering, but I wondered if anyone is doing anything to prepare for it. I do beleive we will have a Pandemic, maybe because I saw that Graveyard on the Colorado plains where everyone in the town died in 1918. I have been buying extra non perishable groceries since November, a few items at a time when doing regular grocery shopping. I now have 15 boxes and 20 gallons of water and enough pet food for 3 months. IF it does happen I won't need to go out and battle with people in the stores. IF it doesn't - I've got enough food for three months and I can just use it up. IF things get bad enough that my boss decides it's not worth opening the store, I'll pack everything into the RV and head for a State Park and wait it out. I'm not worried about getting the flu, I'll either live or die, but with the preperations I've made I feel more able to cope. 1984 Class A Allegro Bogie the Pit (rescued) The road ahead is smooth. You are being very wise, Sparkle. That and extra careful hygiene methods, is what is recommended.
Being prepared and opting to stay away from people (and outside germs)are good moves.
I pray this will not be bad.
The Forum is slow today... just when I could use entertaining!! Guess I'll get into the pages of my book.
Happy day!! Jomilt from Texas

Sparkle, What an interesting topic. I brought the subject of fighting cancer when we were in PF. I ate properly and exercised and it didn't prevent cancer. I guess it has changed the way I view things. If bird flu comes I will be as careful as I can but I am not going to make preparations now. I guess I believe when it is your time nothing stops it. I went to Lowes today and bought a Reverse Osmois System for my well water. I just found out I have been rinsing the pesticides off of the strawberries with arsenic laced water. I have been drinking this for 40 years. Maybe arsenic kills cancer. I guess you must do whatever makes you comfortable. Groovin Grannie 1999 Georgie Boy Maverick Eastern Shore of Maryland

ShirlV...I have to agree with you. I remember when there was a threat to our nation with Cuba..and some were stock piling. Same with the millennium. I didn't store up. Like you, I'll be cautious with this bird flu, and do what I can to take care of myself.
I WILL evacuate from Hurricanes..as that IS coming. straight at me!!!
Just because I feel God has my life planned, doesn't mean I'm going to jump off a 40 story building to "test Him".. I am not a REAL blond!! ha!!
I hasten to say this does NOT mean that those who are more cautious than I and are storing supplies are WRONG!!!
This is a discussion here...Right??? Not a "smart me..dummie you" statement...Grin..
I had to laugh at your arsenic laced strawberries, Shirl!!!

Jo, I was married to a bricklayer and money was scarce in the winter. I have regular checks coming in now but I still have my freezer and pantry stocked for winter. :) Groovin Grannie 1999 Georgie Boy Maverick Eastern Shore of Maryland

DH was a Masonry Contractor...so know what you mean about winters..My freezer is full too.
Do you find that rainy and or cold days are your favorite ones..? Due to his work, and the hours he worked, our only time to bum around together was those cold and/or rainy days..and even tho' we've been retired for 24 years, that still remains our favorite in weather..meant a lot to us back then!!

You know Sparkle.. while I was in Florida I listen to the news every day.. and every day they kept saying how things were gonna happen ..and how people needed to take this seriously..It is scary..and I think also no matter what you attempt to do..if your susceptible to it...your resistance is low..I don't think you can avoid it..If it becomes air borne..it becomes another part of the element..just like the Asian Flu, the Swine Flu... I take precaustions..and worry...but how long can you really stay out of contact..? .. I pray that they will develop a vaccine to help.. ShirlV... I too, took care of my health did all the right things and still got Heart Disease (genetic) even though I tried to avoid it.. I had 3 heart attacks..1 silent.. and 2 I won't forget .. I pray that all will be safe..
God Bless Barbzeee Life is full of surprises, just go with the flow !

Hi - Sparkle, although I admire your preparation(you'll be covered in any disaster event), I'm afraid I am desensitized to warnings and can't get excited until I see events unfold. Since Jeanne, Frances, and Wilma hitting Fl, I now take hurricanes very seriously and Leave. I did see post-hurricane, no water, no electric, no gas, no food, and nothing moving. It took a long time for things to get back to normal and it did occur to me that the situation could not continue without real danger in folks trying to get items to survive. You stock up but until recent hurricanes not for as long as you needed to. I don't know about the bird flu. My mother was 8 during the Flu Pandemic in 1918 and told stories about many people dying. During my lifetime and yours, they contained Polio, Diptheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Hepatitis, some cancers, even Aids - all killers, so I guess I feel more secure they will contain Bird Flu if it jumps from birds to humans. Still think you are smart in being prepared. ShirlV - the arsenic could account for your nice complexion!!! The victorian ladies used it for that purpose(also to poison their unloved ones) :) Marysdream Its all good!!!!!

How interesting!
Yes, I watch what's happening. But no, I don't really prepare. I couldn't fit all the water and dog food necessary in my little rv anyway.
I try to do what's best, but do have a somewhat fatalistic view on some subjects. I'll envy you, Sparkle, when I'm in the stores being exposed and trying to get out-of-stock items, but I'll be in the stores! I do try to never get below at least a week's worth of food for myself and the dogs even in the rv - but it could be interesting eating!
When I lived in a small town in WI, my freezer was always full. The nearest good grocery was 30 miles away and that wasn't always easy to do in the winter! And my ex was a bricklayer also - what a small world! Smiling is contagious - try it!
