I love feeding the wild birds and have put up feeders on our winter site for the last two years. They have always been busy, as has the terra cotta dish of water that I put out for them. I even had a pair of Eastern Towhees and a pair of Mourning Doves that bathed regularly in the dog's water dish! They LOVE the fresh water even more than the seed.
Well....we moved to a new, shadier site in our park about 10 days ago. Took the birds, and new bird friends, about 10 minutes to find us and the seed and water. I am now the manager and pool cleaner for the park Bird Swimmin' Hole! I have to refill the dish several times each day with fresh water! One after another they dive right in! Brown Thrashers, Catbirds, Jays, Chickdees, and Titmice, plus Carolina Wrens, Finches and Warblers and MORE! I love sitting out on my patio and watching them. They all get along so well, too. And have you ever seen those gorgeous Red Bellied Woodpeckers? I have a pair......
God is good! He sure made some beautiful creatures, didn't he?

One more thing: I'm barely speaking to my DH today because he noticed a bird fly into our hitch on the fifth wheel. I hadn't seen birds going in there. Well, he reached in and brought out a HUGE nest with 5 speckled eggs in it. I told him to put it BACK! But he wouldn't. He put it in the crotch of a nearby tree and I haven't seen any birds near it.....sad.....
But now our hitch is blocked up with a towel so no more birds can get in. If you have a fifth wheel, you might want to block yours up, too.

OH that sounds like so much fun! I love to watch birds but unfortunately I have cats and the two just don't mix! I do put hummingbird feeders out at home and love the occasional sighting of those tiny hummers...they are so gorgeous and seem to be fearless for such tiny creatures! Enjoy your lovely day birdwatching!! I am at work :(

OOOPS! I missed the bird nest post! That DOES NOT sound like fun! Hopefully the momma will find her nest! You sound soft hearted like I am...my stepfather once took a bird nest down with newly hatched babies in it and stomped on it...I have never forgotten it nor did I ever forgive the hateful old man for it. Hope your babies fare well!!

I feed the birds too. Since my trees here have only been planted about 8-9 years, I'm just starting to attract chickadees and a few blue birds. I mostly feed the finches, sparrows, doves and some junco!! Where I lived before I moved here I had everything from Indigo Buntings to Nuthatches--everything found in the area. I love watching them!

We are bird lovers too, and have several feeders, birdhouses, bird baths for them. I am not very knowledgeable about birds...but we don't have the red bellied woodpeckers, DO have the red headed woodpeckers tho'...LOTS of Cardinals, We have the same little doves that come back every spring. Both Milt and I enjoy watching them a lot.
Our spa is in a large, glassed room to the back of the house and we sit in for an hour each afternoon and watch the birds, squirrels and God's neat sunsets..what we can see of them thru the trees..Winters, we see more than other times of the year.

We once had a bird build her nest in the ladder of our fifth wheel. When we got ready to leave DH carefully lifted nest with eggs into the nearby tree. Of course, never found out the eventual outcome. Unfortunately, we couldn't delay our leaving until the eggs hatched.

Funny how I have noticed the birds making nests in the 5th wheel hitches, saw one doing that in Nebraska.
I too put up my bird feeders and my cats love to watch all the feathered friends and go nuts when I put the suction cup feeders on the windows. We have dark tinted windows so we can watch the birds but they can't see us.
Biff got so excited one day that he bounded towards the front window and forgot there was a windshield between the bird and him...BAM! That poor kitty was seeing stars and sulked back to the bedroom pouting with a headache!
I have to put a baffle on my feeder pole to keep the squirrels and racoons off the pole and not to put it too close to the trees so the squirrels can jump.
I had one squirrel than kept jumping on my roof and I think he was trying to get to the feeder on the window. I kept thumping the ceiling to get the critter off. Well he was mad at me and you know what that stinker did...he chewed a hole in my window awning! So now when I unroll it you can see 3 holes in a row!
If it was my Dad we'd be having squirrel for dinner!
I do love to watch the birds and after taking a special class from Bob Difley I bought a spotting scope and love getting close to the animals through the scope.
WARNING...be careful in the desert, bird feed attracts the mice which attracts the snakes to have mice for their dinner!
Seeya down the road, Jenny

Jenny (Seeya) your dad's having squirrel for dinner reminds me of Daddy's tale about his pet goat.. He loved that thing and his father, Papa Jim got a new truck. Came out one day to find Daddy's goat on his hood... Angered him so badly that he threw an ax at it...and it went through the windshield..Daddy said Papa Jim immediately found the goat a new home..At least he didn't make cabrito out of Daddy's pet goat! :)

I had a goat named Molly when I was lucky enough to own a small farm many years ago. A friend drove in the driveway with their brand new corvette and in a blink Molly was standing on the roof! Molly loved standing on car roofs but was a sweetheart. She never could understand why everyone would get so upset when she did that. My little poodle-mix dog mothered her when she was little and they always were together-having adventures. Happy, funny memory :)
