Hey Dottie....I have a "Higgins", too, but he's named after the Higgins in Magnum P.I. His favorite things to do are catching a frisbee and playing soccer goalie. All boy, our little kid. The kid has more toys than any human child I ever had, and my fifth wheel home looks like a couple of two year olds live in it. He loves going through his toy box and picking out just which toy he would like to play with now. And he expects me to bring him a NEW toy each time we leave him for more than a couple of hours. Thank heavens for the 94 cent dog toy bin at WalMart! Now we just need to teach him to put his toys BACK in the toy box.......
I wouldn't worry about taking your little guys out at night. The parks seem to be pretty safe places. Before I met Don and we traveled together, I camped as a widow, by myself in tents all the time. Never ever had a problem. And those Flexi-leads are the bees knees. Like Barbzee said, it's just like fishing! Reel 'em right in!
Thanks for the funny, SHaron! Loved it!

Thanks everyone for advice on letting the dogs out at night. I already have the Flexileads, so I'll put them to use asap. Barbzeee, you really have no problem staying at Flying J's? I just ordered and received my little "reward member" card, so I plan to do it. Is it self-explanatory about where you go to stay for the night when you get to a Flying J? I would love to save the money (and have a safe place to stay just overnight) when I on my way to Florida. And dogs are perfectly welcome? Wow, what a great deal!
Speaking of dogs, my pups and I are already practicing staying in our little travel trailer during the day in our driveway -- I've set up my workspace in there so I can get all the kinks worked out before I hit the road. And, yes, they both immediately claimed the couch! And, yes, like someone else said about her dogs, they are both excited. I do think they sense that they're about to go on an adventure!!! Well, Dune, my older dog does; Higgins (Higgy) reacts to hardly anything. I'm getting sooooo excited, less than a month to "take-off."
Always seeking sunshine, traveling with the pups, leaving the hubby at home,

You know, Dottie...it doesn't hurt to exercise caution and to be careful. However, I would NOT be frightened. I read a lot of forums and I have never read of a case where an RVer....man or woman was attacked and harmed!! Haven't even read a posting where a friend of Friend HEARD about someone being accosted!
You will find very few places where dogs are not welcome. Some prefer small dogs...and ALL wish them to be attended at all times, and on a leash, and picked up after. Who can blame them for those rules? It's what I would want if the park were mine!!
Just go, have fun and report back to us!!
Happy Travelin'

I stayed at many Flying J's last year. Where to park at each can be different. Some have places for rv's up front - others you need to drive back by the trucks. I think my dogs recognize the parking lots by now :) I paid for their monthly internet service for 4 months on the road - as I knew I could then always connect from them - and my battery died, but most of the Flying J's with restaurants have a couple tables with electric - they'd let me sit there even if I wasn't eating.
I always felt comfortable at them - but always keep your eyes and ears open - no matter where you are.

Laleeda, All us dog show people as we truck on the highways do the stop overs at Flying J's.. they also have decent food..well I should say most..LOL as we all know how that can go.. Have I ever felt unsafe there..NO..but let me say I also pay attention to my surroundings. You'll see a lot of RV's parked there..it has become the #1 place ..next to Walmarts..although I have really never stayed at a Walmart. You'll get a map from them also.. I have 2 one for home and one in the motorhome..this way all know my direction as I'm traveling.. I've also used their connections too.. but now use my PC card..
Isn't it great just sitting inside..next will be the on road travel.. but do keep eye on your weather and map our your travel.... Like I said, I only drive so many miles per day.. I'm never in a hurry.. and like to check out areas as I travel..
I also make sure when I'm at Flying J's before I leave I fill my tank..in case I've had to run the generator at night ... it's just a thing I've learned to pay attention too.. Check your tires before leaving too.. I do that at each fill up.. Just make a check around .. making sure pressure is maintained in tires... After the first few go arounds it will be come automatic.. Like I have a check list before I leave LOL... see what I have on board..all present and accounted for..
You will be so excited.. honestly I do remember my first time out... I was so proud of myself..and you know still till this day I feel the same way..everytime I pull this rig out...
God Bless and We all look forward to following you on your journey..
Barbzeee
