I have taken multiple long distance trips. 2 adults. With freeway and secondary roads it averaged out to about about 45 - 50 miles an hour (distance traveled divided by hours on road). That included stops for fuel, lunch, change drivers. Even on the freeway traveling 65-70 miles an hour it usually worked out to about 50 miles distance per hour of road time.
An 8 hour drive is a really long day for one driver... Don't push to hard or no one will enjoy it  A tired captain makes for a tired crew. Enjoy your trip.

NJ to the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone is a lot of miles...hope you have a lot of time to do this trip. We usually only do 300 miles a day. We like to leave early and get to the campground before it get busy. We are usually tired by the time we get there. I hope you plan to see some of the areas between your destinations. We had a tripped planned from Texas to the Grand Canyon for two weeks. We didn't get to go because that was the year the Grand Canyon was on fire. I would like to recommend that you plan a stop at the Petrified Forest. I was there as I child and hope to go back one day.
