I was wondering what it means when I see an m/h for sale and it says: "only 350 hrs. on it!"--referring to the onboard Onan generator. What are they talking about and after all the hours are up--what do you do?
thanx

Franny: The generator has a meter similar to a speedometer that records the number of hours it has been run. Obviously, one with only 350 hours on it has been used very little. You need this to determine when to service the generator, like oil changes and other maintainence.

Too few hours on a gen set can be a problem, Onan recommends that you run your gen under load about 2 hours a month, that keeps fresh gasoline in the set.

Running with a load on the generator means you must put something on that the generator is supplying with electricity like an airconditioner. You would do this when you are NOT hooked up to electric at a camsite or at home where you store the RV. Or, if you use your generator alot because you dry camp(without any hookups of water, elec or sewer) you do not have to run the generator. You would run it about every 2-4 weeks winter and summer. To tell you the truth, mine has not been run in months and when I try to start it, bang it starts but what I do is not the way to keep a generator in good running order.
