Hello, Ladies........ I'm a single, 60-year-old RVing woman. I'm a Good Sam and KOA member and have always stayed at those RV parks when traveling. Lately, in some cities, a KOA can cost as much as a discount motel. I just checked out Passport America's website. If any of you has a PA membership, would you recommend that I join? Half-price campgrounds are almost too good to be true! I frequently travel on the interstates between Albuquerque (where I live), St. Louis, and New Hampshire. Would I find a decent selection of PA campgrounds along that route? Maggie

We are fulltimers and have been Passport America members for several years and have always more than gotten our money's worth. Any of the parks that we have stayed in have been nice, however, frequently they are a ways off the the main interstates. They also often have restrictions such as only good in off season, limited to a certain number of nights, no reservations, W&E only, etc. If you are planning to travel much I would highly recommend joining.

Passport America can save you money. With one thought, the parks vary in quality. Some can be little more than trailer parks and you wouldn't want to stay there on a bet. Some are very nice. Call ahead, ask specific questions.....Can they fit your rig? Are the restrictions listed in the PA book still correct, they change from time to time. Parks also drop out of the program during the year so you should check before you drive all the way there. Check the rating on the park in a Woodall's or Trailer Life. No guarantee the rating will be accurate but it might give you some other clues about the quality of the park.
Overall for the money it's worth having. You might find the Escapees another worthwhile membership. The parks across the south of the country are basic and can provide you another low cost avenue when traveling as well as great fellowship with other members.

Holders3: I've heard about Escapees - also Loners on Wheels. I intend to contact them as soon as I retire (in a year) and have more time to travel. Thanks for the info.

I, too am interested in feedback on Passport America and other such clubs. I just got a couple of fliers re "Choice Camping Inc." and "Resort Parks International" which offer a higher up-front fee, but then it's $5.00 per camp-night. Anyone used these?

What about Wal-Mart? Has anyone actually parked there overnight? Was it okay? Was it noisy? Did you feel safe?

You all might want to check out http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Free_Campgrounds_East/. Some of the sites look pretty nice, and Walmart is often discussed.

Sande, the Yahoo site is so confusing and intimidating to me. I went ahead and registered, but I haven't joined any Yahoo Groups, because I'm worried that I'll be bombarded by emails and junk emails. So I decided to UNregister from the entire Yahoo Group site, but I couldn't figure out how to do that (only how to delete myself from a particular Group). What is your experience with Yahoo Groups - do you have any advice? Thanks.

On the right hand side of the group homepage you can edit your membership preferences. In there you can chose to get lots of e-mail, a digest (once a day) or no e-mail. You can also make your e-mail address private.
I haven't done a lot in that site yet since we haven't purchased our mh yet. I did think that the "Free Campgrounds of the East" book would be a good investment, as just one free night would pay for the price of the book.
We've picked out our mh and hope to order in in a week or two. This message was edited by Sande on 3-30-03 @ 3:16 PM
