We have recently purchased a Chalet hardsided popup. We went camping Friday night. We left with a fully charged 12 volt deepcycle marine battery. We ran the fridge on the dc while driving 3 hrs. and changed it over to LP. While at the campsite we tried to limit the usage of interior lights, sporadic use of water pump, but the heater did run off and on as it was in the 30's outside, at two in the morning we turned off heater. Sat. AM we restarted heater, used water pump to wash dishes, and for a very short time used interior lights. We left mid Sat. morning to go home. Turned off all power switches except fridge which was put back to dc. After driving 1 1/2 hrs. we stopped at rest area and heard the LP detector's low voltage alarm sounding off. By the time we got home (another hour and 45 min)the battery had almost no charge at all. HERE's THE QUESTION: if the trailer's battery is supposed to be charging as we are driving should the fridge drain the battery faster then it charges? How do you know if the battery is charging as you are driving? Our trailer's back up lights also don't work, could that wiring malfunction be related to the problem with battery?
Thanks to anyone who can shed light on this situationl.
