Ants

Ladies, I need some advice. Last year for the first time in the 9 years we owned our motor home, we had ants. We put some ant traps bought in a hardware store. At the end of the season we still would find a couple. I am fearful for this season. Could they have survived the winter? (I am in NJ and it has been a brutal winter). If so, how do we get rid of them? I do not want to do any bombing or spraying. I fear that stuff is harmful for us to inhale and I can not unload the entire motor home and clean it out. What can we use? If they are gone, how do we keep them out? Thanks for the help!

I have used a variety of store-bought ant killers to get rid of them inside. One of the best seemed to be a gooey substance that you put out which really seemed to attract them. Can't remember the name of the product. Of course, I have also discovered that there are different types of ants that require different types of ant killer. I alway carry fire ant powder - Greenlight is my favorite - to use outside.

A long time ago someone told me that when ants are getting in from outside you should sprinkle Comet, (I'm sure any brand of scouring powder would work) around the jacks, water and sewer hoses, electric cord and anything else that they can crawl up and enter the RV. It has seemed to work for me.

One time we were parked under a tree and the branches just barely brushed the roof. I discovered that trip that they can also come from trees, so I'm careful now that no branches even come close to the RV.

Hope this helps.

We had ants in the kitchen of our brick/stick home this past year for the first time ever in 15 years. I blamed it on the extremely hot and dry weather we had for oh, so long! Hopefully your very cold winter will help and I don't want to ever see such a miserable summer again either. I did read this, and will share.

To eliminate ants from entering my RV from the water hose and power cord while hooked up to campground facilities, I use a small amount of petroleum jelly or lubricating grease. I coat a 2” section of the water hose and power cord around the surface. This stops these pesky insects in their tracks. Clean up for travel takes only a few moments using a paper towel.

Good luck to both of us...

Happy RVing

While I couldn't totally eliminate them I found that Windex window spray did a fine job of stopping them in their tracks. Then just use a paper towel to wipe them up and put a shine on the counter!

Sheesh - like ants in the woodwork, look who's on the forum! LOL I'm a Windex gal too - it's my go to solution for darned near everything. However - there may come a day when I have to deter them instead of just mopping up the dregs.
