Hi, ladies. I have this posted on the general forum, but thought I would post here too. My mother now needs oxygen and I am wondering how safe is it to travel with oxygen in a motorhome? Any thoughts and advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi Candy

I don't have any personal experience in this area, but found this article that might help

http://www.portableoxygen.org/motorin...

I'm sure that with a little planning it's very possible to travel in a MH with someone on oxygen.

Good luck and keep us posted :D

Candy,

My Dad was on oxygen for years. He gave up his truck camper and bought a turtle top van which my DH and I converted for him (he supervised). There was space behind the driver's seat for two tanks and he could stay hooked up all the time he was driving and since the tanks were beside the sofa, he was able to use the oxygen without moving them. A portable one on wheels enabled him to sit outside at the picnic table, etc. So, to answer your question - Yes it is possible to use oxygen in a motorhome. I don't think it would be any different than using it in your home - same precautions would apply.

I would imagine filling oxygen cylinders on the road could be a major pain unless you plan ahead. Make sure you get things taken care of prior to leaving with one of the nation wide suppliers. Lincare is a nation wide DME/home care services, and medical gas fill plant. I would find a national company who could supply oxygen wherever I was.

If you got caught in a lurch, any ER, 24 hour clinic or Firestation could offer help on getting refills.
I'd also suggest you carry a prescription with you to show in case any company wanted to see one.
As far as safe in RV's----- using oxygen would be just like using it in a sticks and bricks home.
I hope your Mom can continue enjoying traveling for a loooooong time!
Happy Travels!
