Hubby is almost ready to pick up our new TT, we plan on doing this on the 15th. We have taken alot of time making lists ( and lists and lists) and making plans for trips (this usually happens around 2:30am when we wake up and start thinking about stuff) Anyway, a friend recommended Passport America membership, it's only $44.00 a year....any advice out there on these clubs? What about KOA, etc?

Advice please!!

AndiJean... We've been RVing a long time, and belonged to most memberships for staying in parks. Passport America is the only one I recommend. It is half the price of the regular park's price.

KOA parks are expensive..and all membership gives you is 10% off....Ditto Good Sam..

Our first trip out for the season ALWAYS covers the yearly membership of Passport America, --- and then the rest is pure savings... You can save more by taking out the 3 year membership.. Don't remember how much it is, but that is what we do.

Enroll in Passport America and enjoy!!!

We'll be expecting photos of the trailer on the 15th....so don't come up with that "forgot the camera excuse"..... Grin..

Happy RVing!

one thing you need to do is look where you are going are there campgrounds there that you can use passport at? We have heard they are good but haven't gotten it yet as where we commonly go they are available. Maybe this spring when we head east and north

I had it for one year but the places I was going to visit didn't take the membership. Right now I have Good Sam. Have used it once but enjoy the newsletters I get from them.

Thanks all for your replies, think we'll start with a year membership ($44.00) and if we find we use it alot then go to a 3 year. So exactly when do I start sleeping better and not waking at 2am wondering about things like...what do I need to put in the black water tank? how many hoses do I need? can't forget the camera (or I'll have to answer to Joella!!!) when to use propane/electric, etc. If I could only slow my mind down!! I shouldn't complain...many people right now can't do what we plan on doing.

Have a wonderful day...

To answer your last question first - NEVER! Well, you probably won't wake up in the middle of the night worrying about these things after awhile, but the problems, concerns, etc. never go away. It's just a part of the lifestyle and you WILL make mistakes - just ask any of us who have made some whoppers!

As for Passport America - absolutely love it. Are there inconveniences? Yup! Do some of the parks have impossible restrictions on lengths of stay or times of the year? Yup! Are there often parks that say they no longer participate? You betcha! I've found some really bad parks, but I've also found some really good ones. More often than not, they are along major arteries and fairly easy to find. When Sharon and I visited Texas a couple of years ago, we used PA almost exclusively! We found PA parks near every place we wanted to visit. Most we could call ahead and reserve or at least ask if they thought we'd be able to get in. So a ton of money was saved times two! I'm also a Lifetime Member of Good Sam, but certainly didn't join for the 10% discount on camp fees! There are other copycat memberships (Camp America, etc.) but usually they are the same exact parks offered by PA. A lot depends on the part of the country you are visiting whether you are happy with PA or not.

This is not to be confused with memberships in Thousand Trails or Coast to Coast, etc. That's another whole ballgame. I'm not a particular fan of KOA because they tend to nickle and dime you for amenities and so many of their franchises have gone down hill in the last few years. Now I'll probably be beat with a wet noodle by those who love KOA. Again, depends on the area visiting.

Hope your experience is positive.

I have learned so much from the ladies in the forum plus the Ramblin' Roses and RV Women groups. I read a lot as well. Just read an article that says to keep two hoses - one was used to wash out the dump pipe after you've emptied both tanks when you are leaving a site. It also recommended keeping a bleach solution in a spray bottle to spray the ends of the hose and the water pipe before you connect when you are hooking up. I have two garden hoses in my rig but carried the second one 'just in case' something happened to the first. I also have one of those little things you screw into the water spout so you can connect both hoses.

For what to put in the black tank. At Walmart of an RV store there are all kinds of products but I use something in a little pouch. While I'm running water into the toilet I drop in the pouch and then continue to run the water. I read somewhere that you should always have some water in the black tank to keep odors from forming.

When you are hooked up you use electricity. For heating I use propane. When I"m on the road and have food in the fridge then I switch to propane for the fridge.

I still consider myself new to all this and learn something new all the time. At the convention in San Antonio I learned how to clean out my hot water heater!
