I found a website that lists plans for people to build their own camping trailer, fifth wheel or truck camper. It's way cheaper than buying a new one, and they look like the trailers, campers and RV's that come off the assembly lines! The plans/blueprints for various trailers/campers are about $45 to $50. It includes the blueprints, templates, cut list and supplies and names/addresses of suppliers for parts like windows and appliances. I see that it's possible to build anything from a "teardrop" trailer to a 24 foot fifth wheel. These plans are geared towards the begining handyperson and seem to be really great. My question, has anyone out there ever tried doing this? Any tips, advice or warnings? Also, my MAIN question is HOW do I determine just how much weight my mid-sized truck (6 cyclinder 4x4 extended cab Ford Ranger XLT) can actually tow without harming the engine or transmission? From the Ford Websites I read, I THINK it's about 4,000 pounds. I read on here that one shouldn't trust a brochure for towing weights. So where do I get this information? Salesmen tell me all kinds of things, but can't tell me where they get their information. Before I order the blueprints, I want to make sure I'm getting a weight appropriate plan. Thanks!
