In 2006, we had our new Toyota wired as a tow vehicle and bought a brake buddy for it. After a few months, the electrical signals from the Holiday Rambler RV stopped working completely.

The dealership "rewired" the RV and the signals worked for a day or two and then completely failed again. We went back to the hitch specialist who wired the Toyota and he installed a "black box" which worked by tying into the RV taillights.

The black box failed and we replaced it three times before buying a new Fleetwood Bounder in 2009. These usually worked for several months before failing.

Now the Bounder tow signals have also completely failed and the voltmeter shows no voltage on the jacks leading from the RV to the wires powering the Toyota lights..

We're beginning to suspect that the Toyota is the problem source. We are in Newfoundland at the moment and have no idea how to fix the problem in either vehicle (assuming the Toyota has a problem, too). Any suggestions? carold/bobd

carold/bobd - Many of us can empathize with the toad wiring problems you're having, and I wish there was an easy answer. The solution some of us have reluctantly arrived at after throwing lots of money and effort at the problem is to use auxiliary lighting, which in my case is magnetic "stick-on" lights that I install whenever towing. They're inexpensive and since they use their own wiring, not the toad's, are pretty reliable providing the motorhome's wiring is OK. Some folks are now using similar "wireless" lights that make installation even easier, but they are more expensive. Good luck. - Dave

Carold, I set up my Toyota/Lexus by simply installing two suplemental LED lights from Peterson Mfg. Co. I removed two reflectors from the rear bumper and bolted the new LED's in their place, then ran my own wiring up to the plug at the front bumper. Simple setup and easy to troubleshoot if I have a problem, since I know what I did (As long as my memory holds out, of course).

Thanks for the suggestions. Sometimes simple is better....One person also suggested replacing the "homemade" wiring in the Toyota with a Blue Ox toad wiring kit and looking for a fried "splitter" in the Bounder.

When I started using a toad, a mechanic told me never to mess with the wiring especially with a Saturn. I made up a light bar with four three inch LED light units. the two outboard are wired to the markers, and the two inboard are brake and turn signals. I place it on the rear shelf and it has two folding legs to steady it. The wiring runs (with a connector) down through a hole in the trunk, along the chassis with wire ties and out thru the front grill where there is a weatherproof connector.

The light bar also has a utility outlet into which I plug a rotating amber light (which also sits of the rear shelf) for night traveling.
