I think its Hobb-Ebberly. And, the Penn State guy was named Robert Ebberly. Maybe only one B, I am not sure. Its a cool telescope, we visited it with a daytime tour a few years ago.
Tonight, we viewed the moon and Mars through the 107 inch telescope that sits on the other mountain peak not the one the HET is on. It was very cold up there tonight, 32 inside the dome of the telescope. Good thing we had our Alaska jackets with us!

I thought they did this on the Wednesday closest to the new moon, but it is the Wednesday closest to the full moon and of course we did look at the moon. We also had a great lecture on spectroscopy down at the visitors center.

Last night a herd of 15 Javelinas walked through the campground at the State park, that is largest single group of them I have ever seen. A couple of foxes ran across the road as we came down the mountain and yesterday, a white tail deer tried to stick its head in the truck!

After 3 months of crazy weather in the valley, we're leaving Mission in the morning, saying goodby to 70+ degrees. Due in Ft. Davis on Sunday. Is there still snow on the ground? We may be making a big mistake heading that way but we love the mountains, etc. Not anxious to pull the 5ver up there if the roads are wet/icy.

Sorry, I was out of town for a week and missed this post. As you should know by now, the snow was gone by the next day. It doesn't last here in this part of Texas. (it doesn't snow where I live, at least not since we have been here) It was pretty up there at the Davis Mts State Park. RV the cat didn't know what the snow was. He had never seen snow. It was pretty funny to watch him try to figure it out.

Just back from a weeks deployment with FEMA for some training in our direct housing ops. The best part was the tour of our regional headquarters building. It was constructed in 1963 for use as a nuclear blast shelter for government officials. Everything is underground, 25 ton blast doors over the elevator shaft and stairs, positive air pressure inside the building, underground silos for antennas and a shielded comm room to die for (if you are a ham radio guy like me) Even the toilets have shock absorbers and flexible connections.

Of course, its no longer a shelter and some of the stuff has been removed. No more decontamination room, its an office now.

There are three large diesel engines designed for locomotives that are no longer used and are too large to get out via the elevator. Interesting problem.

John,

Did you notice the brand of diesel engine? Back in the 50's and 60's I worked for Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co. We built huge diesel engines (up to eight clylinders with up to 24" bore) to run massive generators and other equipment. They would have CP cast into the cover plates. There is an old 3 cylinder in Jerome that they fire up occasionaly. I didn't see it run but the guy said it shakes the whole valley because it has no muffler. I believe it! We test ran the engines for a week or so before they were shipped but had a pretty sophisticated muffler system. Still, that whole end of town rumbled around the clock. People just got used to it.

I emailed you a picture of the side of one of these monsters. I didn't pay any attention to the manufacturer. They are big suckers.

Thanks John,

I didn't recognize the address so I didn't open the picture until I saw this thread. That isn't one of our diesel engines. That one has steel plate side covers where CP had cast iron side covers with the logo cast into them. That may be a GE.
