ONAN Microquiet 4000 series model 4kyfa26100k year 2003...
Will actually start. Runs a few seconds at a normal speed then winds down to nothing and quits with Fuel Code 36. Does this whether switch held in START or released once genset begins to run. Coach gas tank was at 1/2 full, added more gasoline, still same problem. Owner's manual says to hold the switch in STOP and it will light while pump runs to prime the carburetor. This function appears to work, but genset still fires, runs a few seconds, then quits Code 36. Wouldn't start last year, carb and and logic board replaced. Any suggestions to troubleshoot and repair? Does anybody have an emailable copy of the manual? THANKS!!! God Bless, jd Sunny Florida

Sounds like one of two things to me, either the generator is low on oil triggering the low oil safety cut off, or the in line fuel filter to the generator is plugged or partially blocked. Neil

Dutch, Can you help me be sure I'm formatting the request properly... From the Model Number in the OP, it looks like I select "out of production" then disregard "4", threat "KY" as Model, and "K" as Spec. That's what I did and the Owner's Manual came up as "Not available for Download". In another section of the results page (which came up Model=KY and Spec=K as I had requested), the Parts and Service Manuals came up as "Dealer" with nothing showing up as "Available for Download" or designated with the Acrobat/PDF icon. Am I out of luck or did I format my request wrong?
Neil, I see where you're coming from. From experience with other small engines I'd agree with you. I only know about our much older ONAN BFA 4.0 genset. That one has no electronics, but I know the Start/Stop switch has to be held in Start long enough for the engine to "establish itself in Run" (my words, might mean oil sensor/oil pressure, producing its own 12VDC for ignition, not sure...). This one actually sounds like it's going to keep running but then winds down like it's out of gas. I don't know that it would sound different if the ignition was cut off, though. But it does seem to me that if the PRIME mode was enough to fill the float bowl, say through a mostly clogged fuel filter, enough that it could start, that it would run more like a bowlful of gas out. That'd seem more like 30 secs or a minute than 3-5 secs.

About the ONAN Manuals site - I downloaded their generic "owners handbook" and from that information it's clear the KY and K for Model and Spec were what the site expected, they just don't offer it for download.
About the problem - A local shop just told me there's an electric fuel shutoff solenoid on the bottom of the carburetor float bowl that is likely to be sticky. I looked to see if the bowl would come off with the genset still in the coach and didn't see a solenoid, but it's a little complex in there. He said if the solenoid's shutoff valve pin was sticky the engine would get a few drops of gas and that would be it. Thanks - Case Pends - Standing by for updates... God Bless, jd Sunny Florida

Hi, jd,
I got to the page on the Onan website that I linked to my first response to you, then went to Current Model area, put in model KY and Spec D-H, hit Submit, and was able to download an Owner's Manual for the Microlite 4000 Series. It may not be the one you want but it was as close as I could get. Hope this helps. Dutch '07 Allegro Bay 34' '03 Honda CR-V

I got the code 36 from this link . http://www.cumminsonan.com/www/pdf/manuals/981-0159D.pdf ENGINE STOPPED FAULT—CODE NO. 36 (Engine stopped without command by controller) Corrective Action: 1. Gasoline Models - Check and fill the fuel tank, as necessary. (Note: The genset fuel pickup tube is probably higher up in the fuel tank than the vehicle engine pickup.) 2. LPG Models - Check and fill the LPG container, as necessary. On cold days the LPG container may have to be kept at least half full to provide the rate of vaporization necessary to keep up with the genset fuel demand. 3. Secure the spark plug lead on the spark plug (Page 3-6). 4. Replace the spark plug (Page 3-6). 5. Service the air cleaner (Page 3-5). 6. Check for mechanical damage. mike

I've got the service manual with troubleshooting chart now, so let me get into this and I'll let y'all know what happened. Coach is home with me now so I can at least get working on it. But there are a couple busy weeks ahead so a report may take awhile. You've given me a lot to go on, so let's see how I do. Thanks, everybody! God Bless, jd Sunny Florida

I had the same problem, it turned out to be the generator fuel line from the top of the tank had cracked and that caused the gen to lose prime and stop running. I got lucky as the factory told me the only way to replace the line was to drop the tank. I found an access hole on the passesger side that I could just barely get into with one arm to change the line. It now works great.

I cleaned the carb main jet area and have been able to get the genny running. It'll carry a load for as long as the load is there, but now it cuts out when the load drops off, like when the a/c compressor cuts off and the load becomes fan only. It ran under compressor load for three hours then quit when I turned the thermostat to go back to fan only. Next thing I'll pursue is cleaning the carb idle circuit. It doesn't look now like the fuel line is the problem but I'll keep it in mind. THANKS!!! God Bless, jd Sunny Florida
