Spent 4 weeks in Colorado working DR 4145 with FEMA, the Colorado floods. I was managing the Disaster Recovery Center in Loveland. Funny thing was we spent the whole summer over in Dolores, CO. We left that last week of August and drove the rig back to Texas because it looked like something might be brewing in the GOM. I didn't want Libby to have to drive the rig home alone. Two weeks later I was deployed back to CO. Oh well, so much for planning.
When I went to work for FEMA in 05, we called in once a month to tell them if we were available for work. We were required to be available at least 60 days each year. That worked out great for us, we could plan trips, visits to the kids etc. In 2013 the Reservists have to be available all the time, but can take up to 60 days of leave. That doesn't work well for the majority of us who are retired and have a life outside of FEMA. After four deployments in the last 12 months that were either too quick or too far for me to take my bride with me, I decided to hang up my spurs again. My last four deployments were New Orleans last September, NYC in November, NYC in March and Colorado last month. After leaving Colorado last week, I resigned from FEMA.
Now that I am fully retired again, we intend to travel more and play golf. Maybe my game will improve. Mike, Dave, I finally broke 80 a few days before this last deployment!

Congratulations John, on both your re-retirement and your golf game. Now that work will no longer interfer with your golf, I'm confident there are lots of sub-80 scores waiting for you. And who knows, maybe there's even an RVA caravan to Alaska in our futures.....or at least another Quartzsite. Good luck - Dave

Good for you, now maybe we will get a little more action on this site. The goal is to reach the same number of years retired as working. Got just a little over 5 to make my 30 plus.

Well, since FEMA was a part time job, I've been retired since 2001, so I only have 7 or 8 more years to equal my BellSouth time. However, if you add in the 9 years I taught third grade, it gets a little more difficult. I resigned so quickly this time I didn't have time to do the annoying countdown I did back in 2000!
Dave, I'm not sure I'll ever get Libby to go to Quartzsite again. I'll try.

Need to go see the new Q'Site, sure not what is was. Next thing you know they will end up with a Safeway/Albertson and the book seller will be wearing clothes.

Grimsey:

Come on down to Q.

There is an RVA get-together every year in La Posa North (across from the big tent).

Yearly blurb on invitation and directions will be haunting your eyes sometime in November.

This year, Q come early -- Jan 18th thru 27th.

I think we have some newbies again this year, but some of the old timers have other pplans.

See ya in January.

Cheers and happy travels, Mike www.backroadtravelers.com
