Some of may have seen the story this week about some FEMA folks being deployed to NY and NJ and then not being assigned any work for several days. The picture in the story I read on Fox was of my Disaster Recovery Center on Coney Island. We use 38 foot Coachman Mhs to proved our coms for temporary locations. FEMA has the furniture removed and long desks built into the living area. We don't let applicants come into the RVs due to liability issues with steps etc but they provide a satellite link for telephones and computers.
Just as info, I flew into La Guardia Thursday Nov 1 and Friday morning at 6 am I was in the parking lot near the parachute drop on Coney Island Brooklyn and seeing applicants before 8 am. Mayor Bloomberg came by about 8:15 so I explained what we do to him ( wearing my Bill O'Reily No Spin jacket). I had th ebusiest center in NY for Hurricane Sandy seeing over 5000 folks in 15 days (4 of them outside in that parking lot, before we moved about a block to a gym in a Catholic HS). We got snowed on and I can tell you it was much colder than South Texas in November
However, there is some truth to the original story as some folks were deployed but had no place to work for several days. Those recovery center locations are found by the locals and the state so we had the people to help folks just not the locations.
Now I'm back home in Brackettville and glad to be out of NYC!

it takes a special kind of person to give up your time and home to go help other people in need time after time, and at a moments notice. Bless you.

If you guys would come down here, I'd pay for a round on our golf course. Shot an 83 last week. Of course my best round ever is 81. Sure would like to break 80 some day. Not getting any younger so I probably should do it soon! BTW, the next round was a 93 so it just depends on what game shows up. My best 9 holes ever was with you in WI Bob. Then you weanied out and we had to leave before completing 18. Geez.
I can't just pick up and go for another year with FEMA due to the early SS limitations on income. I popped over their max by about 1600 bucks this year so I'll have to give the Feds $800 next year. In 2012, I shelled out $2800 to the FEDS to pay back SS overages. However, next December I turn 65 so I can make a bunch more in 2014. After 66 they don't care but then I don't really want to work all that much anyway.
However, everytime there is a disaster, I drag out my go bag just in case. I haven't been able to deploy in the RV for a couple of years because they keep sending me to far away places. I did work a tornado in Oklahoma in 2011 so Libby got to go with me for that one. Other than that, I've been to NC, MA, GA and NY over that last couple of years. The last time we went out of my region (TX,LA,AR,OK and NM) was for the Nashville floods a couple of years ago. Now, instead of working out of our regions, all of us are part of HQ Cadre so we will do a lot more work in far away places. Bummer.

And now I'm back in NYC still working on. hurricane Sandy. I was home for three month but was redeployed here a couple of weeks ago. I'll be here until March 29. I'm in a hotel two blocks from Times Square. Got snowed on Friday. This certainly isn't west Texas. However, as any good RVer, I've learned to ride the Subway to work. My office is in Brooklyn so I take the 2 or 3 train from Times Square in midtown Manhattan to the first stop in Brooklyn.
Friday I saw a class C parked on 40th street a couple of blocks east of Broadway What a brave person to bring a rig into the city.
I'm looking forward to getting home to Texas and getting back into shorts and short sleeve shirts.
Taking the rig north this summer. We will be looking for cooler climes to perhaps spend our summers. This deployment, I tell Libby I'm working for diesel fuel. My hourly pay is about 6 gallons per hour!

Hey John, if ya have time on yer way north this summer, how about stoppin off here in MO for a couple days? I've got full hookups for ya. The crappie fishin is usually really good. And, we have a nice 9 hole public course which is the best little public course I've ever played. We're an hour south of Sedalia off state hwy 7.
