maybe you could find an older gearhead to time it by ear. many used to be very accurate.

Richard - I'm guessing you have the P30 chassis, and if you perform a Google search on "1979 Chevy P30 timing tab" you'll get a ton of hits. You can find several models, depending on your particular engine, at the below link. You might want to call their service dept. to find out which is best for you. Good luck. - Dave

I just picked up an85 pace arrow 454 chev haven't looked for timing stuff yet..... if you know where it should be set eg... how many degrees you can bring number 1 cylinder to top dead center then mark TDC top dead center on the crank damper and the block then Mark some timing degrees as well on the damper ...... Now just line up the crank to the Correct Mark go to the distributor and turn it back and forth to see where it sparks thru the number one plug wire and lock it down ...... Back in the day of points we just hooked up a light bulb to the coil and set timing marks then turn distributor till light comes on and Lock it down check it after and your always right on the money...... This was the way the volks wagon guys all did it but with a alligator clip and used the dome light I always carried alligator clips in my done light cover

Try this method you will never need a timing light again just a wire and bulb.... or go of the spark... Btw this is how i set my 78 harley sportster timing because the clear sight Window into the crank is impossible to see with oil flying around when running and taking out the sight Window makes a huge mess
