I wondering about the new GCs (Gift Cards) & Pre-Paid Debit Cards vs TCs (Travelers Checks).

I have used credit cards and American Express TCs, when RVing and traveling in the past. Now many places won't TCs.

The trend is headed toward GCs and/or Pre-Paid Debit Cards. You can't redeposit a GC after returning from an RV trip, as a general rule.

Does anyone have any ideas on the pro and cons of these new ways of paying Does anyone have any ideas on the pro and cons of these new ways of paying for things while away from home?

We have been using Visa and Master Card Debit and credit cards since hitting the road in 2000. They are on 2 different banks. We mostly use the Mastercard Debit card. I wouldn't even think of using a prepaid credit card or gift card. Lose either and you are SOL. Travelers checks are a PITA. Just my opinion from experience.

I have seen no such trend.

We have used credit cards to pay for everything we buy for the ten years we have been full timing. The card we use most is a Visa rewards card. We build up points that can be cashed in for gift cards at a lot of places like BestBuy.

There are a few campgrouds that give a discount for cash.

I suggest getting credit cards. carry a little cash and your check book for campgrounds that do not accept credit cards. cash advances from a credit card can be expensive. also shop around for a credit card with no annual fee, and if you pay in full each month it will cost you nothing. some even let you build up points for a cash refund.
