The Beast has developed a roof leak over the shower that I can't find the source to.

I've been all over the roof, around the skylight, around all the roof fixtures, around the sides where the roof meets the fiberglass, down to the windows, with tons of caulk. Yet, with the rain comes a substantial leak from around the skylight into the shower, and a small trickle running down the opposite wall to the shower.

The roof is one piece stainless steel, and the Beast is parked in a slight downhill/driver side angle, so I know it can't be coming from anyplace forward of the restroom. I've even pulled off the rear AC cowling and everything appears to be tight there as well. With the angle the Beast is parked, I really feel like the water is coming somewhere around the skylight; however, it's sealed up tight from the top. I think if I can get it started this weekend, I'll change the angle and run the hose over it and see where the water goes.

Any suggestions?? I'm just about to throw a blue tarp over it and call it a day!

Sorry about the leak, Gene. They can be a real bear to find. As the coach is parked now, what other roof structures are "upstream" from the shower skylight, i.e. above the shower on the tilted roof? Water could be running in from a roof vent, refer vent, or other structure, getting under the stainless steel, and finding an exit at the shower. If that's the case, when the coach is level, or tilted in another direction, the water will run, and exit, elsewhere. Does the stainless extend down over the sides of the roof? If not, one of those seams might be the culprit. The few stainless steel roofs I've seen were in panels and a seam joint could also be the problem.

I've said nothing that you don't know already, but I'm just trying to provide a little long-distance moral support.

Good luck, and let us know what you find when you take the hose to her.

Gene, we had a leak at the shower skylight last year. Since the skylight was now a cruddy dark yellow, I just pulled the skylight and replaced it with a new one. Made sure that I cleaned the area real well and used a heavy app of caulk when I installed the new one. No more leak. Sure saved a lot of time trying to find the leak.

Thanks for the words of support! The skylight consists of a "glass" cover on the roof, then a second "glass" in the shower, with the inside one mounted behind the ceiling board. There is no condensation getting between those panes that I've noticed. On the roof, I've gone all the way around the skylight mount with a wide bead of sealant overlaping at least a half inch on the glass and off to the roof (good thing you can't see it from the inside!!!). The only thing(s) on the roof "upstream" from the skylight is the air vent over the bed, covered by a MaxAir vent cover, all sealed up as well like the skylight; the rear AC, also caulked up nicely, to include minor weather hairline cracks starting to form in the cowling; the rear fiberglass cap that comes up over the rear of the coach - has a seam and the rear ladder screwed into the top, all equally sealed up (at least to my eyes...). The steel roof is all one piece, extends over the sides about 1 inch, then there's the "trim" where it joins the sidewalls, all plastered up as well. I really don't see anywhere that THAT much water is seeping through when it rains. My son and I gave it a very thorough going-over when he first told me it was leaking. After we filled in a few cracks and separations around the edges, we thought we had it beaten - then more rain came. We're both stupified (that word comes to me after several Mojitos this afternoon sitting on the roof of the Beast...!)

Gene, this is a puzzle. My shower skylight has trim around the inside, and that trim covers the edges of the hole that was cut in the roof to install the skylight. If you remove that trim, could you see the edge of the hole, and the "sandwich" that makes up the roof? If you see that sandwich, can you tell where the water is coming from? It could be coming under the skylight trim. It could be coming from under the stainless steel roof. It could be coming from somewhere else in that roof sandwich. If it has been leaking for some time there might be a stain where the water is coming over, through, or under the coach roof. Again, good luck with the quest, and watch those mojitos while on the roof.

Gene,

I see you pulled the rear AC cowling. But have you checked the bolts that squeeze the gasket from the inside? Sometimes these will work loose and allow leakage. Make sure they are snug but don't overtighten. You may need a new gasket, but try tightening the bolts first.

Good luck

Taking a page from fixing my old Class C, Have you checked the front/ rear marker lights, or any side mounted items (antennas, awning mounts)? Anything on the sides that may be below the roof line but above the ceiling. One stupid loose screw can cause the problem,

Steve is spot on, on the marker lights. I have had to seal mine 3 times since I have had the rig and replaced 2 of them they were so bad. They looked fine from a distance.

Mystery solved!! The culprit was an over-tightend awning mount, where the pressure had separated a seal UNDER the mount, so it wasn't visible from the top. The main patio awning has a "trough" between the coach and the metal wrap that was channelling the water directly against that separation at the mount site.

All for naught now, however - I sold the old Beast yesterday. I went to the RV park Saturday to pick her up. The 460 started right up after having sat almost two years without starting. I drove her home, the flat spots on the tires smoothed out nicely, got her cleaned up good, took some photos, and put her on Craigslist. I had 146 phone calls and emails between 8 - 10 pm Sunday night when I posted the ad. The first couple who drove 75 miles to come look at her took her home yesterday. I've been in mourning since...

But now the fun begins!! I've already got my eye on, and test drove, a 2003 Safari Zanzibar, 40 ft DP, from a local consignment shop.

Anyone have any comments about this line of coaches?? The Beast's money is burning a hole in my pocket!!!

Hey Gene,

Congratulations on the sale. That must have been a nice unit to sell that fast in this economy.

As far as the Safari, they were made by Beaver in the old days and were great reliable well put together units. I believe they were sold to Holiday Rambler and built under their name for the model year you are looking at. Holiday Rambler knows how to build coaches so I feel it will be as good as they were.

Good luck making the deal.
