Have an Onan gas 7kw generator that won't fire. Cranked it, let it warm up and then added the first a/c and then the 2nd. It ran about 2 min. then shut off. Now it won't fire up. Thanks for any help.

Do you have enough gas in the RV tank 1/2 or better?

Thought I had trouble with mine (7.5 Onan). Turned out I had left an a/c on. When I tried to cranked up the generator it would not start. Did all kinds of trouble shooting. Is all your things off like refrig., electric hot water tank (if you have that) and both a/c's. Maybe this will help. Hope you find your touble.

have you checked your settings? is it set for winter or summer. where are you? winter weather or summer weather? have you let it run for awhile without a load? Do you have the gas cap vent open or closed on your fuel tank? That is the most common screw up which I have been guilty of many times.

I appriciate the response from everyone. The answer to your questions are, I run it every month with full load for about 2 hours, the gas is a full tank, nothing was on, the cap is tight, and its about 75 degrees in florida today,so I have the setting on summer . This weekend I'll check to see if its getting gas to the carb. If it wasn't getting gas, I would think that it would sputter and not just shut off.

Don't forget, most generators have a low oil safety switch. So if the generator happens to get a little low on oil, it won't start or continue to run. It shuts itself off and won't start until the oil level is correct.

Glenn - Does your model have the capability of displaying error/diagnostic codes? If so, what error code, if any, is being generated? - Dave

Glenn, I think you may have misunderstood what I was saying about the gas cap. I was refering to a 6gal gas can like I have in my fiver. The cap has a small screw fitting in the top. This allows the tank to vent as it is feeding gas. if that screw is screwed down tight the gas will not flow for very long after you start the genset

I am making the assumption this is the earlier Marquis III generator. If not this may not apply.
When you press the start button, observer the throttle position. About 1 second after it starts cranking, the throttle should snap to the wide open throttle position. If it does not, there is a problem with the ignition system. The electronic governor gets its pulse signal from the primary side of the ignition coil. If it does move, then I would look for a fuel problem. Of course you need to make sure the spark plugs are actually firing correctly. I always keep a can of carburetor cleaner handy. When I encounter the above problem, I spray into the carb throat and observe. If it fires off, you have a fuel problem.

Pulled the intake hose off of the pump, and put a short piece of clear hose on the fuel pump. That way I could watch and see if the pump would pull the gas out of a glass jar. It would only pull it about half way up the tube while cranking. At that time I pulled it out of the jar and blowed on the line, which forced the gas in and out of the pump. The gen. fired and burned all the fuel out of the hose,so I figure the pump must be bad.
