I have a 1990 Fleetwood 37J on a Chevy P30 Chasis. I need to remove the engine. Is it possible to bring the motor out the front or does it have to be lowered out the bottom? I have looked and measured, but at this point I would have to decide by coin toss. So thats why I'm asking for opinions from anyone here who has had experience with this or similar models.
Thanks, Mike

Mike - I haven't a clue about your particular rig, but usually the engine has to be removed from the bottom or from the driver's side door, if you have one. I can't imagine a front opening being sufficient to allow a front removal. Good luck. - Dave

Had an 87 Cheiftan and they took it out the front with no major problems..If I remember correctly, the motor is to wide to come out the bottom..That was a while ago..

Hi Mike, To be on the safe side, I think I'd call Fleetwood headquarters (one of them)in California and ask their recommendations for removing the motor. I helped pull one several years back and we pulled it out the front. Once you remove the radiator and all the brackets it comes right out. If I recall properly though, it took an extendable engine hoist to be able to reach in far enough and get a good hold on the engine and tranny.

I dropped mine out the bottom. Had to remove the crossmember. The crossmember and front suspension comes off all together. Six bolts on each side. Didn't want to disassemble the front of the coach.

I'm now leaning toward removal from the front, but I'm waiting on the "official" word from Fleetwood before proceeding. Thanks to all for the input. I'll let you know how things turn out. Mike

Mike, Just curious, what happened to your engine? I had a 1990 up until several months ago with about 90,000 miles. Although it ran well and didn't use oil, I worried about it and wondered how the engine could be removed. Jerry

Removed mine from an 87 Bounder a few years back and it came out the front after taking off bumper, grille work & front X member. The dealer I bought it off said they disassemble in coach and remove out the entry door, then assemble new engine the same way. I have heard of all ways, via bottom, side doors and through windshield (after it was removed of coarse). Mine was a real bear, theris not a lot of room to work in. Good luck with your project. Kirk
